History of Ostional

Ostional, located on the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste, is one of the most extraordinary places in the world to witness the magic of nature. This small coastal community is home to the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, created in 1984 to protect one of the planet’s most important turtle nesting sites.

Here, thousands of olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) arrive together in massive events called arribadas to lay their eggs on the beach—a natural phenomenon that happens in only a few places around the globe.

Back in the 1970s and 80s, many of the first eggs laid were often destroyed by later waves of nesting turtles or by predators. To address this, the local community, together with scientists from the University of Costa Rica, developed a unique sustainable management program. Since 1987, Ostional has been the only place in the world where the government legally allows the controlled collection of a portion of the eggs during the first hours of the arribada.

This program:

  • Prevents waste of eggs that would not survive.

  • Provides a source of income for local families.

  • Encourages the community to actively protect turtles and their habitat.

Today, Ostional stands as a global example of how conservation and community development can work hand in hand. Visitors from all over the world travel here to experience the breathtaking sight of thousands of turtles nesting under the moonlight or at sunrise—a once-in-a-lifetime natural wonder.
