🌋  Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano, located in the province of Alajuela, is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic and impressive volcanoes. For many years it was thought to be extinct, until July 29, 1968, when a massive eruption suddenly awakened it. The eruption destroyed the nearby towns of Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo, and San Luis, covering several kilometers with lava and ash.

After this event, Arenal remained active for more than 40 years, constantly releasing columns of smoke, ash, and glowing lava flows that lit up the night sky. This spectacular activity made it one of Costa Rica’s most visited natural attractions.

In 2010, the volcano’s activity decreased significantly, and it has been in a resting phase ever since, though it is still considered active and closely monitored. Today, the surrounding area is a top destination for ecotourism and adventure, offering hanging bridges, hot springs, hiking trails, wildlife observation, and boat rides on Lake Arenal.

Arenal is not only a symbol of Costa Rica’s natural power but also a perfect example of how tourism and conservation can thrive together around one of nature’s wonders.
